Ronco delle Mele - "Hil of Apples" is a single vineyard, single clone sauvignon blanc that is one of the most famous wines of Friuli. The vineyard is very steep and the apple trees still present add alot of organic material to the soil every year. The harvest of vineyard occurs in three triage like sweeps - usually starting at the top of the hill and ending at the bottom. This is a rich and dense Sauvignon Blanc, with extreme character. The wine jumps from the glass aromatically with very robust grass and ripe golden fruit aromas, the palate is rich and the natural acidity is high. 20% of the wine is fermented in large 27 Hl French oak vats with weekly batonage for two months and the rest is fermented in stainless steel.
Recent blind tastings of vintages going back to 1997 have shown the amazing ability for this wine to age beautifully. We were blown away by Roncho delle Mele's sheer freshness and non-oxidative qualities for a 15 year old white wine. We don't recommend aging this wine, it's too delicious now, but put one or two bottles away in your cellar for 10 years and see what happens.
