Bodegas Ramirez
The history of the Ramirez de la Piscina family is one of viticulture. They can trace their origins to the year 1099 AD, the time of the first Crusades. Proof that they have remained in the same village is the Romanesque basilica on the outskirts of the village dating to the 12th century, named Santa Maria de la Piscina. This is one of the few small wineries of Rioja that still carries on the tradition of handcrafted wines. Vineyards are located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Rioja Alta. Grapes are sourced from their own estate of 19.2 acres (8 ha) that is located in the town of Abalos, and they buy grapes from growers in the area of the San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Soil is composed of Calcareous clay which is typical of the immediate district. The climate is Continental with an Atlantic influence. This area of Rioja has a particular microclimate, which is a result of the proximity to the mountain of El Toloño, part of the Sierra Cantabria range. The placement of the vineyards on the southfacing slopes protects the vines from the harsh north winds and allows for longer and better sun exposure.
