La Gerla
Sergio Rossi fell in love with the Montalcino area a very long time ago, by pure chance he was able to purchase the original 6.5 Ha estate in 1976 form Biondi Santi. It's located on the North slope of Montalcino and his first vintage of La Gerla Brunello was 1978. The farm dates back over 600 years and was slowly renovated; today the wines preserve the traditional style of Brunello, but no expense was spared updating the cellars and equipment to stay current with the improvements in wine making. In 1988 Sergio added 5 Ha of vineyards from the Southern part of Brunello DOCG, just outside the village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate. La Gerla now blends the two sites to produce a very complex and age-worthy line up of Brunellos. La Gerla wines are very elegant and showcase the floral, savory character of Brunello, aged exclusively in large Slavonian oak casks for 24 months. Viticulture is strict with green harvesting in the spring prior to verasion, today between 5500 and 5800 cases are produced at the estate from the 11.5 Ha.
