PRODUCER PROFILE

Sicily, Italy
Curatolo Arini

Vinicultural history in Sicily is like no other wine region in the world. The Carthag-
inians were the first to plant vineyards here in 397BC. Today these vineyards are
owned by Curatolo Arini in Marsala. Vito Curatolo Arini built the family’s first winery
in 1875 with a dream to make great Marsala wine and build markets around the
world. Quite a worldly view for a young farmer from Marsala whose family at the
time only had 3 hectares. Through the generations the family grew the winery and
today they are the longest standing family owned Marsala producer. As the world’s
demand for Marsala diminished in the 20th century they began to develop the fam-
ily’s vineyard holdings in western Sicily and into central Sicily to make still wines.
Today they are a thriving contemporary winery with an incredible heritage, they still
makes small amounts of Marsala in the old way with “Mosto Cotta” cooked over an
open fire. Nero d’Avola comes from estate vineyards in central Sicily in the province
of Caltanissetta and Inzolia from Contrada Biesina area in western Sicily. Alberto
Antonini joined the family team in 2001 and ushered in a new level of quality in wine
making and farming, adapting appropriate new ideas and technology but continu-
ing with native varieties and a goal to make elegant wines.
