PRODUCER PROFILE

Piedmont, Italy
Azelia

Azelia is located in the commune of Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Barolo area, between the hard and powerful eastern valley, and the soft and supple western valley. Established in 1920 by Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino, the small farm began to produce everything the family needed. In 1967 Alfonso Scavino, son of Lorenzo, began making wine from the estate vineyards and bottled the first wines of the estate. Luigi Scavino is the third generation winemaker and is supported by his wife Lorella and his son Lorenzo. Luigi continues to apply what he learned from his father, together with suitable new ideas and respect for tradition. Wines are made from 100% estate grown fruit. Vineyard management is rigorous due to the belief that the wine is made in the vineyard, not the cellar. Azelia is known for producing Barolos that possess contemporary qualities that are rooted in tradition. It’s as if the wines have all the elegance of the ‘old ways’ in combination with beautiful fruit and concentration.

Farming Practice:    Farmed Organic     hide info

Az. Agr. Azelia is farmed organic:

Integrated insect and disease control is followed. Strict viticulture is followed to maintain the most healthy vines and strong fruit which put the vines in position to resist disease naturally. When the vintage is very wet, only copper sulfite is used to control mold and applied by hand to balance it's effect. Soil analysis is carried out every two years and organic fertilizers are used only when needed.

The spontaneous crops (grass cover) are left between the rows of vines. Therefore, with the competition for nutrients and water, the production of the vines is lower and, as a consequence, the quality of grapes is higher. Due to this practice, the roots of the vines are compelled to go deeper in order to find water and as a result the vines are less subject to water stress in dry years. Indigenous yeast are used at fermentation, wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, no color agents are used.
